Greenhouse photos from 06/17/13

The dill is monsterous...I must have planted a different variety than I usually do.

The tomatoes have grown like crazy the last couple of weeks and I spied a couple of little ones growing yesterday.

About half of the beets have been picked and canned...8 pints worth.

The kids usually eat a couple of carrots a piece each day.

The melons have pretty much completely filled in all those bare spots since earlier this week when I took photos. We also found a bunch of watermelon growing. They are about softball size already.

Sweet corn will be ready in no time.

We picked a huge bowl of cukes yesterday...now to make some pickles.

My dear husband put of the cattle panels for the cukes to grow up onto...it's working awesome and I love how it works.

Over the last week, we have picked a bunch of green beans and peas. I've froze 8 quarts of peas and 6 quarts of green beans. We are on our way to filling the freezer.

And...it takes a long time to shell peas, but they are worth it...yummy!

The greenhouse is kind of like the 5th child around here...needs a lot of attention, but everyone likes to help out.

What to do on your due date.....

.....plant the greenhouse of course!

My 'due date' was yesterday and I spent the day working, helping plant the greenhouse and answering numerous texts like - "baby yet??".

Greenhouse - Planting Prep

Prep work is under way in the greenhouse for the upcoming growing season. 

I'm getting excited to get some things in the ground...yet it seems a little wrong since there is still so much snow on the ground outside. 

The kids did some rock picking...and were pretty proud of themselves.

 Temperatures vary widely. If the sun is shining, it warms up in there quickly.

 Tiling...tiling...tiling...

 Joe is bringing in some good compost to add to the soil base.

I'm hoping to get a few things in the ground yet this week...lettuce, peas, spinach and potatoes.

First of the melons picked - July 2012

So yummy!

First watermelon of the season picked

This one weighed about 30 lbs. There were big and yummy. 

Early on we thought we were not going to have many watermelons. There just didn't seem to be many growing, but over night that seemed to change and we had them everywhere.

For weeks, every time a neighbor or friend would stop over I would send a watermelon home with them. We probably gave away about 20-25 and our family ate 1 or 2 a week all summer.

Today (09/18/12), there are still some out there and we probably have another 6-8 to eat yet.

I had about 90 hills of potatoes planted. We had already dug up a few hills for meals along the way.

This was he yield when we dug up the rest of the rows. I didn't take a real accurate measure, but there was approx. 300 lbs of potatoes from about 30-40 lbs planted.

We have some reds (not sure what variety) and a bunch of yukon golds (my favorite). 

Most just went into storage to eat later. I did make a few small batches of hashbrowns and french fries for for the freezer that turned out awesome. They actually both are gone and I need to make some more. 

I also have 'can potatoes' on my to-do list, but not sure that I will actually get to it.

These basically grow together with no path between as the season went.

These have long been picked and eaten. 

All my kids love beets, so we have been planting a few here and there.

This was cut a few times. I froze some, made pesto and gave a bunch away.

We picked sweet corn on 06/13/12 for the first time...enough for a meal.

These were all transplanted starts that were moved outside 06/18/12.
